Christianity had appeal to many people rich and poor, old and young, etc. Why was this so?

Christianity obviously gave hope to everyone of salvation and eternal life, but there is more to it than just that. read John 3:16, but don't stop there keep reading. Salvation is a gift, yet like any gift you have to first accept it. It can not be forced on you.
