Did WWI and the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION somehow influence J.R.R TOLKIENS LORD OF THE RINGS?

because i know that it wasn't directly influenced, like Saruman didn't represent hitler or stalin, or the symbol of the ring did not represent the atomic bomb. However, could i support that Tolkien's creation of characters and symbols were somehow influenced by those historical events?
